She is the daughter of Kathleen Marie “Kay” (Sanders) and Douglas Alexander Smart, a teacher. Her father was born in Seattle, to Scottish parents, from Forfarshire. Her mother was born in Washington, of English, Irish, and a small amount of Welsh descent.

Jean is married to actor Richard Gilliland, with whom she has two children.

Jean’s paternal grandfather was Alexander Smart (the son of David Smart and Catherine Cameron). Alexander was born in Monikie, Angus. David was the son of David Smart and Margaret Mill. Catherine was the daughter of Duncan Cameron and Flora Stewart.

Jean’s paternal grandmother was named Jean Suttle.
