Tip O’Neill, also known as Thomas P O’Neill, was an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, from January 4, 1977 to January 3, 1987. He was also Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, from 1949 to 1953, a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts, from January 3, 1953 to January 3, 1987, House Majority Whip, from January 3, 1971 to January 3, 1973, House Majority Leader, from January 3, 1973 to January 3, 1977, and Leader of the House Democratic Caucus, from January 4, 1977 to January 3, 1987.
Speaker O’Neill was the son of Rose Ann (Tolan) and Thomas Phillip O’Neill. His grandparents were all Irish. His Cambridge neighborhood was then known as “Old Dublin.” He was married to Mildred Miller, until his death, with whom he had five children, including politician and businessperson Thomas P. O’Neill III, who was Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, from January 2, 1975 to March 6, 1983.
