He was born in London, to Irish parents, his father from Leitir Mealláin, Connemara, County Galway, and his mother from Killeenduff, Easky, County Sligo. His brother is writer and director John Michael McDonagh. His parents returned to Ireland when he was 22. He has both Irish and U.K. citizenship.
