Norman was born in Washington, the son of John Gunnar Erickson Gullans, who was born in Finland, and was Finland-Swedish, and of Clara Aurora Johnson, whose parents were from Halland County, Sweden. Louise was born in New Jersey, the daughter of David James McGill, who was from New York, and of Ann D. Ashall, who was English.

Katya’s maternal grandmother is the daughter of Edmond Henry Drumm and Audrey/Aubrey Jane Hunter. Katya’s great-grandfather Edmond was born in Michigan, the son of Edmond Henry Drumm and Jessie Edna Miller. Audrey was born in Michigan, the daughter of Harry K. Hunter and Evelyn Johnson.
