Robert Bork was an American judge, government official, and legal scholar. A Republican, he was Solicitor General of the U.S., from March 21, 1973 to January 20, 1977, (Acting) U.S. Attorney General, from October 20, 1973 to January 4, 1974, and Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, from February 9, 1982 to February 5, 1988.
Robert was the son of Elisabeth Mildred (Kunkle), a schoolteacher, and Harry Philip Bork, Jr., a steel company purchasing agent. He was married to Claire Davidson, until her death, and then to Mary Ellen Pohl, until his death. Robert had three children with Claire, including human rights activist Ellen Bork.
Raised a Presbyterian, Robert converted to Catholicism while married to his second wife. His first wife was Jewish and his second wife was a former Roman Catholic nun.
Robert’s paternal grandfather was named Harry Bork. Harry was born in Pennsylvania.
