Jim McGovern is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party, he has been a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts, since January 3, 1997, and Chair of the House Rules Committee, since January 3, 2019.
Jim is the son of Mary Ann (Konopka) and Walter F. McGovern. He is married to Lisa Murray McGovern, with whom he has two children.
Jim’s paternal grandfather was Alexander McGovern (the son of Alexander Joseph McGovern and Grace M. Kelly). Jim’s great-grandfather Alexander was born in Adams, Massachusetts, the son of Scottish parents, Francis McGovern and Rebecca Arnott. Grace was born in Massachusetts, the daughter of Martin J. Kelly, Sr. and Elizabeth Clarissa Welch.
Jim’s paternal grandmother was Anna Celena Toomey (the daughter of Ann and Timothy Francis Toomey). Timothy was born in Massachusetts, the son of an Irish father, Michael Toomey, and of Mary Foley, who was born in Middlesex, England, to Irish parents, James Foley and Johanna Kane.
